How do I know when my used car’s spark plugs were last changed?
Review the vehicle’s maintenance records, service invoices, or digital service history. A sticker under the hood may also record previous maintenance. If no documentation is available and the vehicle is near its recommended replacement mileage, have the plugs professionally inspected.
Can spark plugs last 100,000 miles?
Yes. Many platinum and iridium spark plugs are designed to last approximately 60,000 to 100,000 miles or longer under normal conditions. Always follow the replacement interval listed in the vehicle’s owner’s manual.
What happens if I do not replace worn spark plugs?
Worn plugs can cause difficult starting, rough idling, reduced fuel economy, slow acceleration, and engine misfires. Continued driving with a severe misfire may damage ignition components or the catalytic converter.
Will replacing spark plugs improve gas mileage?
Replacing worn or contaminated spark plugs may restore lost fuel efficiency by helping the engine burn fuel more consistently. However, new plugs are unlikely to improve mileage if the existing plugs are still in good condition or another mechanical problem is causing the loss in efficiency.
